Not Exactly Deep

What you mean to me
It's not exactly deep
But still I'd like to keep on
Loving you my sweet one

What you mean to me
It's not exactly deep
Still I'd like a repeat of
That feeling that you bring on

Oh, oh no
I'm not letting myself let
This get deep

It was nothing at all
You know that we were just fooling
It was nothing at all
Shouldn't have to say
It was nothing at all
This is how I recall it
Honest

What you mean to me
It's not exactly deep
But still I'd like to believe ya
When you say that you need me

You Are the Substance That I Can't Live Without

I never promised I would be honest, but I try
I never made out that things would be great and that you’d never cry
But you’re pulling me under, the fire and thunder, in your eyes
You’ve struck me dumb see I am completely, petrified

And it feels like nothing
It feels like nothing
It feels like nothing, but
You are the substance that I can’t live without

I think it’s symbolic all this blood and vomit we’re tied up in
Oh, still we speak those, loving echoes and fantasie
But now I’m enraptured, truly captured by the awful truth
I wanna shoot you up, but it’s just never enough, so I’m through

Your Kinda Love

Your kind of love, it can get me down love
Such a heavy love that I'm often smothered
You might think it's all a game but
Pretty soon there'll be no one to play you
Cause your kind of love it's gonna bring us down love

(but) there's something beautiful about the way you lie

Your kind of love it's a lost and found love
I'll never know just how you really feel about us
You've been chipping away at the edifice
So pretty soon there'll be nothing left of us
Your kind of love it's gonna bring us down love

About

Hello, dear person who has made it this far. At first I was just going to put something from my official bio here, but posting about myself in the 3rd person feels kind of ridiculous and impersonal. Anyway, I really appreciate your interest in what I am doing.

I am from New Zealand though I now live in Chelva, a small town in the mountains outside of Valencia, Spain.

In 2002 I co-founded an indie pop record label called Lil' Chief Records with my friend Jonathan Bree. Along with Jonathan's recent solo work we have released music by artists like The Brunettes, Princess Chelsea, Lawrence Arabia, The Ruby Suns and Sheep, Dog & Wolf. We also released two albums from my former band with Li-Ming Hu, The Tokey Tones - Caterpillar and Butterfly.

After the Tokey Tones releases I continued to write and record music but I never considered it good enough to put out. My process is somewhat tortuous. Someone described it as akin to pulling teeth and that is pretty accurate. I will tend to write a song and like it for a short period, then dislike it, then revisit it and add to it a bit, then not like it again. I tend to add a lot of layers, though in the future I would like to try and reign this in a bit.

In 2013 I moved to Spain and took a break from my day job (as a programmer, not the running of Lil' Chief) so that I could focus on finishing some songs. Ultimately though the move led to a flood of new songs, inspired by my new surroundings, the breakup of a long term relationship and then by meeting the Greek-American painter Julie Karpodini (now my fiancé).

Eventually I settled on 10 songs that would be my next album. I decided to call it "Loving Echoes" after a line in Kurt Vonnegut's Slaughterhouse-Five. I found a cover image I really liked (a painting that my friend Ben Lustenhouwer made of me). A lot of people helped and contributed. In particular Ryan McPhun (of the Ruby Suns) who co-produced the record. As usual, finishing the songs took a long time. I started drip feeding singles from 2017 with "Your Kinda Love", and I honestly thought at that point the album would be finished in 6 months, but of course it wasn't.

So now it is June 2019 and Loving Echoes is finally out for everybody to hear. Perhaps that is what has led you here. I hope you like it.
